Dan here, you posted on my thread about the Dyn. Contour 5.4's. My 5.4's, like your Special 25's, will be with me till the end, I've got to believe.
For my system, I use a Fosgate pre-pro, a Sonic Euphoria (with a pass-through for MC) passive pre and separate Aragon 300WPCX2 amp to drive my two channel set up. Then there is an Adcom GFA 7400 5X100WPC for center and surrounds. I don't have the multi-channel part of my system hooked up at this time, after a recent system move, I'm enjoying my two-channel set up so much, I haven't bothered with multi-channel as yet.
I really enjoy the flexibility this arrangement affords me, with a premium on stereo, but when multi-channel is working, that sounds good as well. For me, it's been a good approach to enjoying both formats in the relative quality I deem necessary for listening to each.
I'll be looking in from time to time to see how your upgrades go, have lots of fun with it, and enjoy yourself.
