APL Hi-Fi Two Box Transport and DAC. Esoteric X-01 VRDS-NEO converted to a high-resolution digital transport. Separate DAC-M. Completely re-designed PCBs for the DAC-tower assembly. 32bit AK4399 DACs. Custom output transformers made by Lundahl Transformers, Sweden wound with special Oxygen Free Copper wire.
    • Evolution Acoustics MMTwo
    Full range speaker

Each speaker has two 7” ceramic midrange drivers, one 5” ribbon tweeter and one 15” treated paper woofer. Constant voltage crossover. Frequency response of 10Hz–40kHz and 93dB efficient
    • Wave Kinetics NVS

    (with KT-88 tubes)
    130 W RMS at 1kHz/8 ohms
    (with KT-120 tubes)
    Frequency response:
    15Hz to 80kHz (-3dB)
    Signal to noise ratio:
    [greaterthansign] 100 dB (A-weighted) ref. 100 W
    Gain:
    23 dB
    Input impedance:
    100K ohms
    • Audiopax Model 5 SE
    Solid state special edition preamplifier
    • Durand Talea II
    Unipivot tonearm
    • Ortofon A-90
    MC Cartridge
    • Ortofon Black Credenza
The Cadenza Black model is using a Nude Shibata stylus with a boron cantilever. The effective mass of the stylus/cantilever system is extremely low due to the use of a very thin boron rod. This material is extremely stiff and even more lightweight than aluminium.

It also uses the WRD (Wide Range Damping-system applied for MC Windfeld, MC A90, MC Anna, Xpression), controlling the high and low frequency damping separately. The coil wire is the famous Ortofon Aucurum wire, which is a gold plated 6NX copper wire.
    • Evolution Acoustics DRSC
Double Run Speaker Cable - 192 individually teflon coated solid core pure copper conductors.
    • Whest PS.30RDT SE

My Def 2s are 11' apart, toed in pretty severely, and placed close to the long wall of a 14.5' x 22' x 18' high living room whose other long wall opens up to the rest of the house. The speakers are essentially at one end of a 22’ x 45’ x 18’ volume that is broken up by a fireplace, partial internal walls, etc, but that is otherwise hard-surfaced (solid plaster on stone walls with hardwood on concrete floors) and untreated. They are driven by either an EAR 859 or a Yamamoto A-08s SET amplifier (I cannot make up my mind which sounds better) and an EAR Acute CDP (currently in the shop, but that is another story).

With the caveat that I have heard very few speakers in my house for comparison. . . .

Compared to the Def 1.5s . . . they have more presence; nearfield listening is improved and better integrated; there is a good soundstage regardless of where I stand or sit in my living room - even to the far right or left of both speakers; there is absolutely no listening fatigue; there is more high-frequency sparkle, but treble is still smoothe; bass is tighter, cleaner, and more integrated; attack is improved with better impact; set-up is much less fussy; and tone is huge (although a bit darkish with the Yamamoto amplifier) and IMHO even more dynamic and life-like – especially on the proper recordings. Perhaps not the final word in microdynamics and microdetail, but I really do not pay a lot of attention to such things. And perhaps not the deepest soundstage; but, then, the Def 2s are within 4” from the back wall. And when they play, the entire house fills with music - glorious.

I opted for gloss black with aluminum rims; matte black was not available when I ordered them. However, I like how the gloss black anchors one extreme end of the visual spectrum while my white walls anchor the other - the visual analogue of great dynamic range.

Thanks everyone.

I am still waiting for the Definition 2.0 and APL NWO 3.0 to arrive. In the meantime I have moved house - when I get the new system together I will post a new picture. The wooden floor at my old house didn't for me cause any problems - had a very clean sound.

GSM18439 - would love to hear from you about the Def 2.0s. I have gone for the matte black with the anodised speaker rims.

I was very pleased with the Druids but they do not seem to be everyone´s cup of tea - I would have kept them if not upgrading to the bigger brother. I am an amateur jazz musician and listen to a lot of jazz and thought the Druids were excellent - most importantly in terms of tone. When I listened to some of the jazz guitar greats through these speakers, nothing else came close. I would however recommend that you audition them first in your system - with my Audiopax/Melody combination they work very well.

I am also looking forward to getting the APL - a big plunge I agree - but I have spoken to so many people about this player so decided to take a risk.

Wow...going to the APL NWO 3.0 is a SERIOUS upgrade!!! Very nice, neat looking room. Do you feel you have any issues because of the wood floor?

System Edit: Replacing Zu Druid speakers with Zu Definition 2.0 Speakers. Replacing Modwright Sony 9100ES CD/SACD with APL NWO 3.0.

System Edit: Replaced Eastsound E5 with Modwright Sony 9100ES. Large improvement although believe it can still be better. Currently auditioning Zu Druid speakers. Room is very large and open plan with speakers on long wall firing into large space with 8-10 feet behind the listening position which in turn is about 8 feet from the speakers.

vicks7

How big is your room?
