This is my attempt to put together the best system i could for a thousand dollars. I know it's far from audiophile nirvana, but it sounds damn good to me. speakers particularly are quite a steal i think. please let me know what you think, as i'm obviously just starting out. thanks, Ariel

Hey im a college student with bout the samebudget, I highly recomend making some of these for speaker wire http://www.venhaus1.com/diycatfivecables.html a pain to make, but well worth it. took me about a month to make on and off but totaly awesome. and should look into building your own speakers!!

As you were in college, and posting, back in March '01, hence at least a freshman at that point, have you graduated since? Are you still listening to music from time to time, or too busy studying in graduate or professional school or earning a living to do so? The NAD C340 amp was, and remains, a good core component, but you might want to upgrade the CD player if your discretionary income would support that.

I think your on the right track to spending a lot of money once your out of college. Enjoy college--don't spend TOO much time listening--do well--and hopefully be very successful when you get out. This hobby can get very expensive very fast--but you certainly have a much better system than I did in college.

Try some KIMBER PBJ interconnects.Great interconnects for the price and within your budget. Also i would agree to get a decent tuner. You can find plenty of them in Audiogon or Ebay.

I want to add that college radio stations are awesome. Get a used $75-100 tuner later.

Try Wharfedale Diamonds Special Edition (biwire). Just use Monster Cable Hotwires. Buy thosse hoses to hide wire and you're set. They're good and cheap. The bass Eq button in NAD/Proton units sounds beautifully with the Diamonds at low volume levels. I had Wharfedale Diamods hooked up to a Proton Dual Mono 50WPC power amp in college and most people would swear I had a subwoofer. My neighbors hated me. A five disc CD changer is useful for getting laid!!!! But you need not pay Sensei Nakamichi for his name. It's all robotics nowadays. As for interconnects, I just bought Carver Pro studio grade. No magic, just single crystal OFC, 100% shielded and grounded. Amen.
