The speakers are a recent addition. I replaced Acoustat Model Twos from the 1980s as they were not playing so well anymore. Perhaps, some day I will find someone to fix the acoustat, and set up a second system.
I'm not sure what I want to upgrade yet. I'm thinking about changing the CD player. Maybe a Rega planet or Jolida JD-100 with Svetlanas.
I'm also thinking about a new amp, but I do not know what I can get for under a thousand that can do better than my Hafler amp.
I would suggest the Forte' Model 1a, Model 4, or 4a, or even a Model 3. Nelson Pass designs in the late 80's early 90's. Usually available on Audiogon for $600 or less. 1a, 4 and 4a were purported pure class A while 3 was high bias AB. Absolutely gorgeous sound and totally without solid state nasties. Excellent neutrality in frequency response. For greater depth and bigger soundstage and associated dynamics, you also might look for Classe'Audio Fifteen,DR-8 or Dr-9 occassionally available for under $1000. Classe'gear of the early 90's designed by Dave Reich were built like tanks and were mellow in the top end(almost tubelike). Capable of near holographic performance.
