Description
I started a few years ago with my old home theater set up (Sunfire, Acurus amps, mirage speakers, MK sub) and have slowly replaced everything since becoming more of a two channel listener. At this point I have switched completely to vinyl listening. I love the "routine" of handling, cleaning, cueing, etc. My first addition was a Project Debut turntable, I then picked up the BAT preamp and removed the Sunfire, added a Grado PH-1 phono amp, and still kept the Acurus 2 channel amp. I then removed the Mirage speakers and replaced with Usher CP 6311 speakers. Next I removed the Acurus amp and replaced with a Sonic Frontiers Power 1 tube amp. In the meantime, I sold the Project Debut turntable and picked up the Thorens TD-125 MKII with the SME 3009 series II arm. A very nice improvement over the Project and a nicer look. I liked the sound of the Sonic Frontiers amp but wanted more bottom end and had read some good reviews on the Usher R 1.5 SS amp which I thought would work better with the speakers. After using the Usher amp which I definitely like, I upgraded the phono preamp to the Sutherland Engineering Insight. What a musical difference it made. Now pretty happy with the system, I was still looking for a little more full range and decided to upgrade the speakers. I just added the Tyler Acoustics MM5x's and had Ty build them as floorstanding models. They sound very nice (much more bottom end) and are gorgeous. The next upgrades I would like to work towards are: a Dynavector 17D3 MC cartridge; Walker Precision Motor Controller; speaker cables; a more solid stand. I have learned that this audio hobby is somewhat like an addiction, as I always seem to be looking for the next upgrade or tweak. I am enjoying the journey since that seems to be what it is.
