This is the third system i've posted on Audiogon and it's the best by a good margain. I started out with a Mcintosh 2002 amp back in 1989 and it's taken this long to get another one. This system repaces a SET single driver speaker system and to my surprise sounds more like single ended triodes than the actual SET system. I'm borrowing from a friend the Audio Physic Virgo Speakers until i get refunded or his patience runs out(Thanks Joe!). They really sound good with the 275 on the 4 ohm tap. Down the road purchases on the wish list are cables and a new stand. Have added an alternate SS amp, the Mcintosh MC252 for a change of pace.
Have your brother try Don Better Audio in Shaker Heights. I bought my previous speakers, Cain and Cain Abbeys and Bailey sub there. Don is a very good dealer and very knowledgable. Unfortunately, Don doesn't carry much that i can afford(under 3k)at the present time.
Oh well, if you want to buy new, your only choice is to travel. I have a JM Lab dealer here in Roanoke VA. My brother lives in Cleveland and I have looked and looked for a hifi dealer of any kind but couldn't find one. Is there not one at all? I have two and live in the sticks!
The local dealer that sold JM Labs folded after 25+ years of business. It's getting harder and harder to find a dealer that stocks what we would like to audition. I live between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and the choices get slimmer year by year.
Great to hear it beats your SET system! I love those moments.
Sorry to hear about your speaker troubles. I just read Joe's post.
For 14x16, I have to recommend the JM Lab Electra 936 (or the 926 if your room is bass heavy). It really sounds fantastic for $3000 or so used.
If you can spend more, the 937Be or 1027Be might be just the ticket. If you read the Hifi Choice review of the 1027 disregard their comments about its lean bass. They were testing them in a huge room! I don't know how reviewers can have so little sense sometimes. Anyway, JM Labs love McIntosh amps (check out my system page). That would be my suggestion. Good luck!
