DA converter with own Dumpty power supply. After all these years, still the digital system to beat.
47 Laboratory Gaincard
Amplifier running on dual mono mode (using 2 Humpty power supply). Still beats behemoths that weigh 200 pounds!
47 Laboratory Phonocube
A very natural sounding phono stage that does not bring attention to itself: it just blends in beautifully.
Garrard 301 on Lignolab custom-made plinth
Solid performer. Will not be out of place with more expensive tables. A verified classic!
RS Laboratory RS-A1
An amazing tonearm that changed my vinyl from good (RB300) to incredibly dynamic.
Shelter 501 II
Natural and smooth sounding cartridge. See no reason to spend a fortune upgrading if improvement is only incremental.
Benz Micro Glider
My first high-end cartridge. Neutral and decent.
47 Laboratory Input Chooser
Passive preamp, source selector. No degradation of sound with other units going through it.
Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M
Open, organic & dynamic. Coupled with a tuneful bass and an extended sweet top - magic! Said to be sonically close to Guarneri Memento. Hmmm, that's really good to know!
Proac Response 1sc
An "S" original upgraded to 1SC status. Speaker is very smooth and enjoyable. Not used much because of Auditor M.
47 Laboratory OTA Cable Kit
Single strand cable that truly belies its size. Would love to be compared to cables many times its size and price - and humbling them! Used as interconnects and power cords (custom-made).
47 Laboratory 4719
Flat and wider cables. Similar to the OTA but with fuller sound.
Ngeorge; I have a 47 Labs demo lined up. I'm also very intrigued by the Konus Audio Essence speaker and the whole single driver, transmission line design concept. It seems promising for small rooms and smaller scale music, but I haven't heard much from users - care to elaborate on your experience a bit?
Yes, 47Lab components have allowed me to get off the merry-go-round. I haven't heard everything available nor can any blanket statement of good, better, best be made regarding the products I have experienced. Only since my current reference system has been in place do I feel most confident with comparative product listening. But, I no longer feel the need to change. So, I may never know if something has the potential to give me better performance than I am getting now.
There are many brands and system opportunities, but finding the one most musical to you is a journey. We happened to take the same path and like you, it has been the right one for me!
I think I will have to listen to a pair of Konus Essence someday.
Several years ago when I purchase my Basis 2000, I was trying to decide whether to spring for the suspension of the 2001 (extra $1000). I was using a Graham 2.0 and Benz H20. The local dealer was kind enough to help me with some comparison demos. What we found was that replacing the the four pods/towers of the 2000 with Walker Vaild Points yeilded better performance than the suspension of the 2001. It was easy enough to compare as you could take the 2001 and just remove the suspension and replace with the Walker cones. The lower octaves were much better defined and overall had better focus. Another significant improvement I found was placing the turntable on a solid maple platform (4 inches thick) sourced from Mapleshade and their Isoblocks under the maple. My room is on the second floor of my house and the turntable is on a Target wall mounted stand.
The Glider is a great cartridge in it's price range, but there is a lot more information passed by better cartridges. Switching to the Benz Ruby 2 was a big step up. If I were to do it today, I'd check out a Shelter cartridge.
