Hey everyone, Looking for comments and suggestions on my system. I have been obsessing about putting together a HT system for about a year now and I finally put one together. WHEW!!! Now i get to relax in my basement and watch great movies and listen to good music. My wife DOES NOT understand this obession at all although she has been great about letting me spend all the money. I know i have to upgrade the interconnects bought i though it was more important to buy the basic setup before spending money on the small things. I am trying to decide whether to buy a separate subwoofer because the 605's have an dedicated amp for the low-end but it seems to be missing the super lows that movies demand. if anyone has comments on dvd-audio/sacd upgrade, would love to hear it. do you think a set of sound anchors for the fronts are worth the investment? would a better cd player help that much? thanks for looking and reading.
Hoppr- definately need a powered sub for the LFE channel. Its the .1 in 5.1. As for interconnects, they can have a very big influence on the sound quality. Good news is that they are easy and cheap to buy used. Consider Audioquest, Kimber, Homegrown, DH Labs, and many others (Canare for digital from DVD to rcvr, cheap and good). Have fun.
Regards, A sub (or two or three) is mandatory for HT. You can make it unobtrusive for music, but go a little juvenile for an action movie and not feel guilty. I have three and only use one for music, but turn on the other two (at reduced gain)for movies - the reinforcement by using multiple subs when an explosion goes off is astounding - just make sure you set then up right (placement). I also agree regarding the CD - for about $250 you can get the Denon 470 (?), that has HDCD, and sounds nice as an interim piece until the DVD-A / SACD gets past the early adopters - enjoy the system. Hi Hoppr, The only thing I can comment on in your system is the HK CDP. I owned a HK 8550 a few years back. It was actually one of the worst CDP's I've heard: very thin, harsh highs, NOT musical. I am awaiting a Sony 9000es SACD/DVD/DVD-A player and will write a post when broken in (takes at least 400 hrs.). This unit has been getting very good posts on Audiogon from members whose opinions I respect a great deal. It might be worth taking a look at. Bill
