For you, since you already have a subwoofer, I would think that (in general) a monitor would be a better value. Speaker cabinets cost a lot of money to design and build, and generally have more drivers, so smaller ones are (generally) less expensive, especially if they don't have a large driver (woofer). Of course, then you'll need stands. But you can DIY stands cheaply enough. Your current speakers are +-3dB at 42Hz. There are monitors that can go below that, but I am not sure if they are < $1k. But they don't need to since you have a sub. You may, at some point, wish to upgrade your sub as well. But that is the beauty of having monitor/sub combo - you can upgrade separately, at different times, as funds become available.
