Description

Well, I played it safe for my first serious system. I had read many solid reviews of both the Krells (the 300i integrated amp and the 300CD), and I am a sucker for build quality and heft (typical American!). There was also resale considerations in case of up-grade-itis. I also knew that the two Krell pieces would mate well together. They did not disappoint.

The speakers were tougher. I had not been exposed to too many systems, and was groping a bit in the dark on this. I was gifted a pair of DIY speakers with the purchase of the Krell 300CD player (thanks Ken) but the speakers were a terrible match with the Krell. Very shrill. I think they were Focal drivers. It was not a pleasant match. I don't wanna blame the drivers: the speakers were not the best built I have seen, particularly when I looked "under the hood".

After more research, I decided to gamble on the Snell AIIIs. Shew, and how happy am I? Perfect match. The Snells are wonderfully balanced with the Krells, and can handle with aplomb any classical, jazz, rock. electronic, noise that I throw at them. I could not be happier.

In the near future, I hope to move from the 300i and am looking to land somewhere in the vicinity of the Krell FBP 300 (for my eyes, the most beautiful of the Krell amps.) The Snells were demo'd for me powered by Sierra Denali's, and the sound with the extra juice (650w!) was nothing short of breathtaking. I would go with the FBP 600, but the cost is a little too much for this newbie.

As an aside: thanks to Audiogon and the community here. You all have been a great help and resource in helping me get my footing in this very complicated, detailed and sometimes confusing "hobby". Thank you!

Wwshull: interesting. The guy I bought the Snells from also had his Denali's paired with Montana XPs (I know they were Montana's, and I am fairly certain they were XPs.) They were an incredible amp with the Snells; the bass had no bottom to it, and the clarity/purity of the music had my mouth hanging open. Sadly, I did not hear them with the Montana's.

I think that people don't talk about the Denali's too much because there are not too many of them around (or so it seems.) I have only seen Sierra amps on the 'gon about three times in the past three years. Scarce, and people must hold onto them once they get 'em. I would to, based on my experience last year.
