Description

Most of these pieces are sourced from Audiogon. I started about 3 years ago with an X-150 integrated and X-10V3 CD from Musical Fidelity. The advent of the SB3 has allowed me to focus on improving the conversion and amplification functions. So I sold the CDP and upgraded the integrated amp.

The AP Sparks are so musical that I don't think I will ever change them.

The DAC odyssey will probably continue. I replaced a Zhalou D2A with the PS Audio DL III and the Tube Buffer.

Components Toggle details

    • Slim Devices SqueezeBox 3
Wireless transport from computer in other room. FLAC files only in my system.
    • PS Audio DigitalLink III
BurBrown (now TI) PCM1798 with no OpaAmps. 96/192 sampling.
    • Musical Fidelity A3.5 Integrated
A very easy and pleasing ownership experience. 150watts into 8ohms.
    • PS Audio PS Audio Quintet
5 isolated pairs of outlets. Terrific filtering at a third of the price for a Shunyata.
    • Kimber PBJ Interconnect
    No nonsense interconnect.
    • PS Audio xStream Statement
Got a great deal on this which is the only reason I bought it. It does seem to help with clarity a little, so I put it between the Quintet and the wall socket.
    • Volex 17604
I have a few of these 14-gauge Power Cables. They are fully shielded and work nicely. I use them instead of the power supply cables that come with equipment. I also have a few medical grade cables for short runs.
    • Musical Fidelity X-10V3 Tube Buffer
Sits between DAC and Amp. It works wonders with op-amp systems that need impedance matching. I find it adds a small amount of warmth and sparkle to my DLIII. Still deciding whether to keep it.
    • Kimber 8PR Speaker Cable
    Neutral.
    • REL Acoustics Q-150E
Got it used on eBay from a guy who didn't really know what it is. Selectable cut-off, terrific complement to the Sparks.
    • Zero Chinese Special
That little box with the big knob on top of the A3.5 is a 20watt TriPath amp (amp on a chip) that takes analog input from the squeezbox and powers the outside speakers. The shipping from costs almost as much as the amp, and it sure works very well. Oh yeah, nice blue led too.
    • Audio Physic Spark mkIII
I auditioned quite a few speakers before I settled on these. They can fill a room and then some.
    • PS Audio Quintet Power Conditioner
Power filtering and surge suppression. PS Audio replaced the cartridge for me when my new place kept setting it off.

Tube pre-amp suggestions anyone?

I'm an Audiogon buyer and have an $800 budget for a new piece to replace the tube buffer. Musical taste is on the analytical side, I get a kick out of hearing the stick hit the symbol and the base string vibrate. I like the bit of smoothness and sparkle from the tube buffer though.
