Description

This was my first system, and it still lives in the house where it was originally built. I learned a lot going through building this, even if the end product is not what it could be (I moved it to a different room, and although the improvement is dramatic, it is still just too bright and forward), I learned a lot from building it, and it is still my only vinyl rig.

    • Axiom Audio M40ti
Floorstanding, 2-way tower, front and rear ports. Single 6 1/2" aluminum woofer. These are nice. Very detailed, but in the context of this system at least, they are too bright for my tastes. Even with vinyl or another warm source. The Adcom amp certainly isn't helping here either.
    • Marantz CD-63 se
I picked this up used a few years back. It has a very warm and musical presentation, although it is certainly lacking in detail. It does a very nice job balancing out some of the none-too-warm components coming after it though.
    • Adcom GFA-535 mkII
    -
    • Adcom SLC-505
I was looking for something cheap and passive to switch sources with, and this fits the bill. I am not unhappy with it, but I think that the entire Adcom amp section is going to be the next thing to go, as this system is sounding too bright.
    • Rega Planar 2
    -
    • Rega RB-300
    -
    • Rega Elys
    -
    • Creek OBH-8se
I haven't compared it to other options, but my vinyl rig is far better than my digital setup, so that says something.
    • DIY TNT-audio X-1.5
Foam insulator from coax cable + ultra-fine gauge, solid-conductor, teflon-insulated "wire wrap" wire + X-pattern geometry makes for some killer cables. Check them out!
    • DIY CAT5 Plenum Braided
Braided (noise-canceling) geometry, individually teflon-insulated solid copper conductors. They do a great job.
    • Music Hall CD25
    With a few mods.
    • DIY TNT-audio Flexy
3 threaded legs, adjustable MDF shelves, SUPER stable....
